Running in the UK mountains demands a different mindset from lowland trail running. This practical guide explains what to pack — and why.

Mountain running in Britain doesn’t demand extreme kit, but it does require sound judgement.

Elevation brings exposure, and weather can change quickly. Cloud can erase visibility, making navigation errors easy. In remote upland areas, you may not see another person for hours, and escape options are rarely as simple as turning around.

Packing properly isn’t about paranoia or over-preparation – it’s about self-sufficiency and carrying enough to manage changing conditions without overloading yourself.

This guide outlines the essential items, why they matter, and how to scale your kit based on terrain, duration and weather forecast.


Essential Mountain Running Kit List

For exposed upland routes in the UK – including the Lake District, Snowdonia, the Brecon Beacons and the Peak District – these items are recommended:

Waterproof jacket (not just water-resistant)

Long sleeve technical layer

Gloves (outside peak summer)

Hat

Tube scarf (“Buff”)

Navigation device with offline mapping, and/or;

Physical map and compass

Small power bank (optional)

Adequate drinking water

Basic first aid kit (minimal but functional)

Foil survival blanket or bag

Whistle for emergencies

This is a minimal baseline that you can scale up according to season and weather conditions.


Why This Essential Kit Matters in UK Mountains

Waterproof Jacket: Protection from Rain and Wind

In UK upland areas, wind chill is a real threat – especially once you are wet.

A waterproof layer keeps you dry, blocks wind and retains body heat if you slow down, get lost or injured, or encounter deteriorating conditions. Even in summer, it’s a must-have.

A good waterproof should be rated to at least 15,000 mm (15K). This means that the fabric can withstand 15,000 mm of water pressure before it starts to leak. Fully taped seams and good breathability are also important considerations for runners.

Long-Sleeve Layer: For When You Stop Moving

You generate heat while running. You lose it quickly when stationary.

A lightweight insulation layer prevents rapid cooling if you:

Stop to navigate, rest or admire the view

Help someone else

Slow significantly through fatigue

Become injured or immobile

Static cooling in wind happens faster than many expect, especially in stiff breezes. And wind is practically guaranteed in higher mountains whatever the season.

Gloves, Hat and Buff: Small Investment, Big Return

Above 600 metres, exposed skin cools rapidly. Cold hands make simple tasks frustrating. A cold head affects focus.

These items weigh very little, pack small and provide a disproportionate return in comfort and safety.

I always pack a hat regardless of season: a peaked cap in summer and the shoulder seasons, and a warmer hat in winter. A peak also helps keep rain out of your eyes.

Buffs (tube scarfs) are useful all year round — they provide sun protection in summer and warmth in winter.

Warm gloves in winter are essential, but I often pack light gloves on fresh summer mornings too.

Navigation: Plan for the Worst

Many runners now rely on GPX and mapping apps. I do too.

But batteries drain faster in cold weather. Touchscreens become difficult in heavy rain. Cloud can descend quickly and remove visual reference points.

That means you should always carry fallbacks:

Offline mapping capability

A small power bank

A physical map and compass

Navigation errors rarely happen when conditions are perfect. Pack with that in mind.

Food and Water: Add Some Margin

Low temperatures, wind and steep terrain increase energy expenditure. You need to fuel and hydrate accordingly.

Food

Carry slightly more food than you think you’ll need – not double, just some margin.

I use this simple formula:

For every planned hour: 35 g of carbohydrate

One additional 35 g reserve

Example:


For a planned 3 hr run, take enough for4 hrs.
4 x 35 g = 140 g of carbohydrate


What does 35 g of Carbohydrate look like?

2 x Medjool dates, or

1 full-size Snickers bar, or

1 handful of dried mango

I often finish with some left over — ideal for the journey home.

Water

Hydration needs vary depending on:

Temperature

Exposure

Personal physiology

Run duration


Most runners need between 400 ml and 800 ml of water an hour, but this depends on sweat rate, fitness level, body size and how hydrated you are when you set off.


Each litre of water weighs 1 kg, so it pays to optimise. I typically carry 400 ml for each planned hour plus a small margin of 300 ml on a hot day.

Consider using an energy drink in one of your flasks – this will provide an additional source of carbohydrate to supplement your solid food.

An electrolyte supplement can also replace essential minerals like sodium, potassium and magnesium lost by sweating. This can prevent muscle cramps during and after the run.

Never set off for a mountain run already dehydrated.


Additional Mountain Running Kit – Season and Conditions Dependent

The more exposed, remote or committing the route, the more considered your packing should become.

Sun Protection

Sun exposure at elevation can be significant at any time of year. Check the mountain weather forecast and use common sense. Factor 50+ sunscreen is recommended. Mountain sun is intense, and wind can mask the early signs of sunburn.

Always protect your eyes with lightweight UV-rated sunglasses on bright days.

Waterproof Overtrousers

Useful in persistent rain combined with strong wind and low temperatures.

Look for a pair that have large side zips so they can be pulled on easily over muddy shoes.

Headtorch

Essential in winter, for afternoon starts or when daylight margins are tight — even if you plan to finish before dark.

Microspikes

Microspikes are lightweight traction aids – like small crampons – that attach to your running shoes.

They are essential in snow and ice and pack down small enough to carry easily. Running in hard winter conditions requires judgement and experience; it should never be taken lightly.

Extra Insulation (Winter Conditions)

Additional warmth is necessary when temperatures approach or drop below freezing.

Heavier weight technical layers, including merino blends are good options in very cold weather. Features such as high collars and thumb loops add comfort and practical warmth.

Running Poles

Modern carbon poles can weigh as little as 200 g per pair and fold down small enough to stash easily.

Poles ultimately come down to personal preference, but they can help with:

Long ascents and steep descents

Fatigue management

Heavy kit days

I often carry poles as insurance on long, solo runs in remote areas. If I were to sprain an ankle, they could increase my chances of getting off the mountain unaided rather than calling Mountain Rescue.


Deciding What to Pack for a Mountain Run – A Simple System

Before leaving, ask yourself:

What is the highest and most exposed point on this route?

What is the wind and temperature forecast at that elevation?

How long will this realistically take me?

How quickly could I descend if something changed?

Am I running solo?

If several answers increase risk, adjust your kit margin accordingly.

It’s always better to pack the item you didn’t need than to need the item you didn’t pack.


Final Thoughts: Packing for Margin

This isn’t a race mandatory kit list. It’s not a major expedition checklist either.

It’s a practical mountain running kit list for UK conditions – combined with a simple decision framework.

Pack for exposure

Pack for fatigue

Pack for the most hostile environment on your route

If all goes to plan, you simply carried a little extra kit – no big deal. If something changes, you’re as prepared as you reasonably can be.

It’s about understanding the balance.
