Four Trail Running Routes That Capture the Best of the South-Western Fells

The Lake District isn’t just a hiker’s dream — it’s one of the most inspiring places in the UK to explore in a pair of running shoes. With its rugged fells, remote valleys, and wide open skies, the South-Western Lakes offer endless variety for trail runners chasing both solitude and scenery.

Here are four of my favourite routes — each with its own distinct character — from panoramic ridgelines to lesser-known Wainwrights. Every run includes a route guide, downloadable GPX file, and on-the-ground photos to help you plan your next adventure.

Slight Side & Scafell – A Quieter Way to Touch the Sky

Most people head for Scafell Pike, but this route offers a quieter, equally spectacular outing. Starting from the village of Boot, you’ll wind your way up to Slight Side before summiting Scafell — England’s second highest peak — via the south-facing approach. Expect stunning views (or maybe a lot of cloud), a bit of scrambling, and far fewer crowds than its more famous neighbour.

Whin Rigg & Illgill Head – High Above Wast Water

Trail run to Illgill Head, with a backdrop of the Scafell Massif and Wasdale Head below

    950 m

This route is a journey of contrasts — from the quiet, forested seclusion of the Miterdale valley to the untamed drama and big views of the Wasdale Screes. The ascent to Whin Rigg rewards you with a thrilling run along Illgill Head high above Wast Water. After a fast, fun descent it closes the show with some contemplative running across Eskdale Moor back to the beautiful village of Boot.

    670 m

Offering a remote, exploratory feel, this run circles the atmospheric Devoke Water tarn and takes in six Wainwrights in quick succession. You’ll get a real sense of space out here — gigantic mountain silhouettes on one side, the Irish Sea glinting on the other. It’s a fantastic run if you’re looking for solitude and a bit of everything underfoot.

Harter Fell from Eskdale – Peak Perfection

Trail run to Harter Fell - looking from the summit towards the Harknott Pass, with a backdrop of the Scafell Massif

    Hard

    13 km

    665 m

This is a compact but tough route that follows the River Esk through the scenic Eskdale Valley before climbing sharply up to the craggy summit of Harter Fell. It’s perfect for a shorter outing, with a mix of tumbling water, open fellside, and some optional hands-on scrambling at the top. The panoramic views from all corners of the rocky summit are top-notch.

Weather can change fast — check mountain reports and pack accordingly

Grippy trail or fell shoes are a must, especially on wet rock and scree

Carry a map and navigation device — these routes cross remote terrain

Take enough water and high energy snacks for contingencies

Tell a friend – share your route and an expected finish time

Respect the fells – stay on paths, leave gates as you found them, don’t litter
